Blake Weld – St. Louis Park, MN

I am currently living in St. Cloud, MN and graduating from St. Cloud State University in the beginning of May 2011. I will be receiving a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree with an emphasis in Photography.

My interest lies in domestic space, specifically exterior space, and its ability for the outside world to gain knowledge about who resides in the space.

My current body of work consists of facades of houses in different suburban areas. With these houses I look for added materials that give an outsider clues of information about the resident. I have a documentary style that creates a consistent composition throughout my body of work.

Casey Smallwood – Chicago, IL

Using narratives found in mass media, I investigate the divide between the subconscious and the conscious, the distance between self-awareness and self-deception.

Placing "the everyday" in roles found in popular culture, I track the moments where these narratives fall apart and create a theatrical truth out of the tipping point between what we know and what we think we know about ourselves and our memories.

My materials, whether my family or my personal notes to myself- all come from a personal space, that can then be analyzed from a public sphere, once reenacted or re-contextualized.

I am interested in the difference between low-tech and high-tech, craft and mass- production, and how these things charge (public) performance and directing to create new levels of intimacy between subject and camera/viewer.

Chau Dang – Seattle, WA

While in graduate school, Chau Dang was studying exploding stars called supernovae, but they weren’t igniting the flame inside her. Then, she discovered the wonderful world of puns. And so it began: she wrote daily puns on Facebook and Twitter. This went on for about a year, bringing a chuckle, a groan, or just a smile to her friends.

One day, Marcus, her manly friend, gave her a handmade notebook to doodle on. This started a new era of chuckles: comics. From then on, she would draw roughly three comics a week, based on everything from current events to relationships.

The comics were for her own amusement, but Chau soon saw that many of her friends were enjoying them, bringing her even more joy.

Her website is a platform to bring LTD Space comics to more people, and she hopes they will bring a smile to everyone who visits.

Everybody needs a little humor in their life , she says.

Claire Accardo is an artist, jewelry designer and purveyor of vintage goods living in Richmond, Virginia.

Currently, her work focuses on using vintage, salvaged, repurposed and found materials. She thinks that there are already so many interesting things in the world that instead of creating more new things, she looks for ways to best organize what is already here.

Recent shows have included Jewelry in July at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, Virginia and It's a Wonderful Craft Show at the Highpoint Project in Richmond, where you can find her work permanently on display.

CJ Nye – New York, NY

Born in NYC on December 9th, 1974, I have been painting in oils for over twenty years. In 1998, my senior year at SVA, I was smooshed by a taxi and lost the use of my painting hand. Although I muddled through to finish my BFA in 2000 and dabbled a bit afterwards, I had given up hope of making a proper "go" at the art-world. But I couldn't change my spots and in 2006, as a senior MA candidate in Arts Administration at Teachers College, I took "introduction to painting" as a coast-class while I finished my thesis. I haven't left the studio since.

Colin Kidder – Memphis, TN

I am a sculptor and video artist currently living in Memphis, TN, where I was born.

My work is about different kinds of human relationships, from lovers to adversaries. Themes of balance and tension between people are throughout.

I like work that touches on deep and relevant feelings.

I urge the viewer to think: about the control that banks have over our economic freedom, about the possibility of being confined to a wheelchair, about the environmental impact of wastefulness, about questioning faith.

I like art that is not straining in its wit, but I do believe that humor is one of the greatest political tools.

I am trying to change the world, but I'll take my time.

He received a degree in painting from Green Mountain College in Vermont and The University of Wales in the United Kingdom and is currently working towards his Masters from Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah Georgia.

Dan Paints in oils "en plein air" on locations around Martha's Vineyard, allowing his surroundings to dictate his composition, while also exploring a variety of media to explain his connection to place.

Although the majority of his work is inspired by farmlands and seascapes of Martha’s Vineyard and his early childhood, travel has played a major role in his work dealing with adaptation to new and old places.

Working on all scales, formats, and mediums, his recent work has departed from his well known style of traditional landscapes reminiscent of the Nineteenth Century American Romantics, to a more exploratory way of explaining human relationships to space and place.

Danny Volk – Chicago, IL

My practice originates from a theatrical perspective. Trained as an actor, I moved from theatre to the visual arts retaining an enchantment with playing pretend in a staged environment and situation.

The safety of fiction allowed me to play within a life not entirely mine. It is that play which is a dangerous desire in our lives.

I use misleading, unrecognizable, and often beautiful objects and environments as the bridge.

Viewer becomes actor through an experience of fantasy only to find themselves engaged in mundane mystery with the world around them.

I am keenly aware of my own desire for specialness and illusion along with the gravity of my responsibility to reality. My work seeks to explore this dissonance.

Dawn Hunter – Columbia, SC

Within her artwork Dawn Hunter creates biographical testimonies.

In the process of creating images that are highly personal to her, she mines popular culture by re-contextualizing and integrating pre-existing figures and forms into her visual language.

She analyzes her reactions to symbolic propaganda within contemporary fashion photography: female stereotypes are constructed as balanced compositions of archetypes and prototypes, thus creating a compelling connection between that which resonates with our cultural identity and that which advertisers encourage us to pursue.

She intends for her artwork to extend beyond aesthetics and to function as educational tools that explore and expose consumer underpinnings that are psychodynamic and iconic within fashion editorials. She feels this encourages divergent thinking and reveals to the viewership the unequal fluency of visual and symbolic languages that exists between the producers of and the consumers of mass-produced popular culture images.

Raised on a small hog farm in Hawk Point, Missouri, Hunter pursued her undergraduate studies at the Kansas City Art Institute, Parsons School of Design, and the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art & Music.

As a Regents Fellow, she received her MFA from the University of California, Davis where she studied with Robert Arneson, Roy DeForest, and Irit Rogoff.

She has participated in numerous solo and multiple artist exhibitions throughout the United States and Europe.

Additionally, she has also received many awards and grants for her artwork, most notably, a Starr Foundation Fellowship, enabling her to be the first American woman to serve as Artist-in-Residence at the Royal Academy of Art, London.

Jason Miller – Memphis, TN

Jason Miller is a native of Memphis, TN where he obtained his Master of Fine Arts from The University of Memphis.

Miller currently works predominantly in large format digital imagery that is often accompanied by unique soundtracks that he also makes. Miller makes everything from start to finish and never uses mediated images or pre-made material.

He is an artist who creates using many different mediums simultaneously. For instance, Miller sings and creates phonetically derived poetry while at the same time building philosophically and visually complex murals using hundreds of single photographs that he makes throughout his daily life.

In Miller’s own words, Each photograph is a word and when combined the photographs form visual sentences.

Miller is foremost known as a poet who uses both words and images to speak his spiritual voice. He manifests his ideologies and emotions in many different mediums, which include both photographic and lyrical formats. He travels domestically within the U.S. to uniquely sacred places ranging from the Smokey Mountains to Mesa Verde, as well as internationally to diverse locations including Costa Rica, Prague, Vienna, Paris, Bruges, and Greece.

Miller’s intent is always to make new discoveries while gathering experimental images and philosophical material. In addition, to collecting personal images through his photography, Miller further enhances his conceptual growth by obtaining new cultural experiences throughout the course of his travels.

Nearly, all of Miller’s artwork is based on the idea of energy changing form in an arbitrary and surreal visual manner. This idea is best demonstrated in his Energy String and Energy Fortress Series, and is also particularly embodied in his written poetry.

As a whole, spirituality and imagination is key to Jason Miller’s artwork.

I am an artist and educator living and working in upstate New York. I studied art at the University of New Orleans, and completed my MFA in combined media at Hunter College NCY in 2007.

Landscape, nature and human cognition are recurring themes in my work. I explore the ways in which culturally formed expectations affect perceptions. Through various combinations of media, I question the disparities and similarities between my subjects. Marcellous Lovelace – Kumasi, Ghana

The work of Marcellous Lovelace is based in escaping the worst situation possible.

Born into a down to earth southern Baptist family, my background in Art came from the heart and soul of Africans all over the world.

My paintings are images of what I study and continue to live through. Using basically anything to draw and paint with, my works are always about something building positivity and what’s important, because the world we live in is so negative and unimportant. Coming from a world of police brutality and racism stands a Man who is not afraid to be exactly who he is all the time regardless of who it affects. If it is Political or Reality, I’m going to paint it just as it is.

My imagination allows me the freedom to live in Actual Facts and not taint my self in materialism and a fabricated world of clothing with shiny trick lets. I’m a Man who is brave, strong, thoughtful, intelligent and defined by my realistic character. I Stand aware seeing children kill for sport in the city I live in, designing thoughts on being about something besides the next fashion trend.

Think and produce substance and meaning all the time regardless of who it offends, Use your mental and your Visual to compose honesty.

Mardi Linane – Redlands, CA

My time at University came at a pivotal time in the field of photography with the arrival of digital cameras and Photoshop. I was initially resistant to digital cameras but by graduation I had my twenty-year-old work horse SLR camera, a new automatic SLR and a simple, inexpensive, point and shoot digital which happens to take amazing photos.

I sell canvas prints of my digital artwork with a portion of proceeds supporting art scholarship for college bound women artists. I am also developing curriculum blending both visual and language arts for elementary age students.

My life must revolve around artwork and getting people to stop and think, not just about the image, but everything that image represents: thought, vision, planning, patience, creativity, production, final presentation, fulfillment.

This is who I am, what I believe, the place I create from. A digital American Modernist.

Michael Krasowitz – Huntington Station, NY

I began drawing on the computer in the late 1990's as a way of creating an abstract diary of my day to day thoughts and ideas. I begin with no preconceptions, and allow the image to develop naturally and organically. This process transcends my normal perception of everyday life and draws from shared human experience. The images presented here are indicative of that process.

I began my career as a photographer, and quickly moved into traditional printmaking techniques. I have worked extensively as a monochromatic artist and began incorporating color in the past 20 years. I continue to work in 2D media and have recently begun working with sculptural concepts.

Norma Greenwood – New York, NY

I have always perceived the world through tactile experience and physical objects, things that surround me exert a strong and palpable energy.

The language of painting allows me to communicate this experience and transform objects into asthetic understanding.

As a painter, my inspiration often comes from the way I see the world through the lens. My photographs are distilled through the painting process and the painting becomes a means for pushing the boundary between abstraction and figurative expression.

I suppose I was born into painting. My grandfather’s paint store in Brooklyn was my favorite place to play; Shiny paint cans, tubes of color and the smell of linseed oil permeating the store were imprinted on me at a very early age. Art has always defined my life.

I have a graduate degree from Hunter College, New York where I had the good fortune to study with masters such as Robert Motherwell and William Baziotes.

Recently, I received grants from the New York State Council on the Arts, a fellowship from the National Academy of Art Museum, a George Sugarman (2007), a Ludwig Vogelstein (2008) and the Queens Council on the Arts Individual Artists Initiative Award in 2009.

Robert Goodman – Philadelpihia, PA

I make large abstractions that combine fields of intricate mark making and broad geometric forms. I am interested in the physicality of experience associated with dense articulation of surface as it relates to notions of space and the body.

Much of my imagery comes from my experiences growing up in south Florida. I respond to the artificiality, fracture, and intensity of the environment as it understood through the aesthetic lens of tourism.

My work has been exhibited nationally at Anna Kustera in New York, Spaces in Cleveland, ZG Gallery in Chicago, Vox Populi and Seraphin Gallery in Philadelphia.

I received my MFA from Tyler School of Art and my BFA from Cleveland Institute of Art.

Stephen Paul Connor – Austin, TX

Stephen Paul Connor was born January 21, 1954.

He is a completely average fellow, and paradoxically, completely unique, such being the mystery of man.

Having been born with 2 legs and 2 arms, over time he was forced by circumstances to do this and that, include going to schools (Pratt Institute) getting jobs (Fashion, Art Director, 3D Animation Instructor) getting married, having a family, and the like.

Regarding his art, sometimes he uses a brush or a pencil, sometimes his art is abstract, sometimes it isn't, sometimes he makes art on the computer, sometimes he is profound, other times superficial, etc.

He enjoys his dogs, has no fish, loves looking at his guitar and sometimes plays it.

Subhashis Chakraborty – Kolkata, India

I've spent 15 years of my life in Kolkata though I was born in an historical city of West Bengal called Murshidabad.

My works would cater to different medias like video art, mixed media, oil painting, illustrations etc.

I'm very much inspired by the different shades of nature...be it mountains or a dense forest , the feel has often been portrayed in many of my works.

I believe that life is a journey, so wherever I remain, always the essence of the place would reveal an extra motivation to my works and finally it would also help me out illustrating various shades of life. I'm always open to new thoughts and expressions which has revealed a complete style of work as an individual.
